International students are entitled to stay in Australia for a certain time with a valid temporary graduate visa. Recently, the Australian immigration authorities have reduced the time for which international students can stay in the nation on this visa.
According to the new updates, international students can study in Australia and stay for only two years instead of three after completing their Master’s degree. Meanwhile, PhD students will be allowed to stay for three years instead of four.
But these modifications won’t be affecting Indian students because of a free trade agreement between India and Australia. Therefore, Indian students studying in Australia will be allowed to stay for a longer duration after the completion of their courses. Moreover, Indian students will continue to remain eligible for longer post-study work visas.
Masters and PhD students from India are the second-highest source of foreign students in Australia after China. The Australian government will allow these Indian students to stay in the country for an additional year.
The new modifications don’t affect the ability to apply for a second temporary graduate visa. But the extension period of two years on the second temporary visa is no longer valid. This change concerns all international students, including the ones from India.

But the additional extra year available to Indian students in Australia is an excellent opportunity. This move comes in light of the growing number of Indian students migrating to Australia for education and post-study opportunities.
The special privilege also reflects Australia’s efforts in trying to welcome students from India with open arms. As the Australian government is focusing on creating education links with India, it is going to benefit both countries. While Indian students will benefit from high-quality education and better opportunities, the economy of Australia will skyrocket with more Indian students applying for visas.
