Conditions to study in the UK have become a little expensive with the recent news. With fees rising by 65% from the previous level, there is an increase in the UK immigration health surcharge for UK visa holders is now in effect. Back in April 2015, a £200 surcharge every year was introduced under section 38 of the immigration act 2014.
The government informed that the purpose of this was to make sure that the migrants proceed to make an ideal and appropriate contribution to the cost of their NHS care. Earlier than that, migrants had free access to NHS care soon after arrival in the UK. The government considered it as overly generous. The youth mobility VISA and UK VISA requirements just got more complicated.
The majority of overseas nationals applying for temporary permission to live in the UK now need to pay an immigration health surcharge or IHS in addition to paying the application fee for a UK study VISA. The standard rate for this would be about £776 per year of the visa starting from 6th February, 2024. And the amount needs to be paid in advance. If we are to tell you the surge of this charge, it is about £306 more than it was.

How Does This IHS Work?
There are many things to keep in mind if you are considering a new UK VISA application. If you have already paid the surcharge or you were exempt from paying it, and your visa allows you to stay in the UK for 6 months, you will be entitled to free NHS hospital treatment in England. And it is on the same basis as an ordinarily resident person. It will start being applied from the date when your UK Visa was granted to the date it expires. However, you are still required to pay for some services like eye tests, medicines, and prescriptions.
If your youth mobility VISA UK or UK VISA immigration ends or is curtailed earlier than planned by the Home Office (immigration office UK), you will be subjected to charges for any NHS hospital treatment. And that will be the case starting right after your VISA expires. Even if you have paid the surcharge, you are still required to pay for the treatments from the NHS hospital. Additionally, you will be charged for any non-exempt treatment you have gotten before the start of your Visa.
How The Rates Have Changed Over The Years?
The UK VISA fees rate for working holiday makers and students is discounted from the full £1035 that is paid by the other visa streams. The higher rates are only applicable to those who are looking for post-study work rights.
The rise of UK VISA and immigration health surcharge was primarily announced in July by Rishi Sunak. The fees and the start date were published on 16th January this year on the Immigration Order 2024.
The immigration surcharge was first introduced in 2013, where the charge was around £150 for each student. In 2019, the surcharge was increased to £300. And lastly, in 2020, it was around £470 for each student.
If we are to talk about the last jump, it happened back in October, when it went up to £490 from £363.
