Policy Update for International Students Planning to Study in Canada

Canada has emerged as a premier choice for international students due to its top-notch academic institutions and inclusive and diverse society. Moreover, the potential for post-graduation employment or permanent immigration in Canada also looks promising. Despite their significant contributions to campus life and national innovation, international students face obstacles like limited housing options while pursuing their studies in Canada.

In an latest update, Canada has declared a significant change in the financial requirement for study permit applicants to increase the convenience of international students. Beginning on January 1, 2024, the cost of living threshold for international students will increase for a better life in Canada. This number will be reassessed annually, taking into account Statistics Canada’s updated low-income cut-off (LICO). It reflects the minimum income needed to cover essential expenses without an undue strain on one’s budget.

The cost-of-living demand for those seeking study permits has remained stagnant since the early 2000s, which is $10,000 for a single applicant. Since it has failed to keep pace with the rising cost of living, students entering Canada may discover that their finances are insufficient upon arrival. Beginning January 1, 2024, those applying for a study permit will need to demonstrate that they possess a total of $20,635, equivalent to 75% of the Low-Income-Cut-Off (LICO). This adjustment will impact all new study permit applications received after the aforementioned date.

With this new reform, student exploitation and vulnerability in Canada will be reduced to a huge extent. The latest update builds upon the previously announced reforms to the International Student Program on October 27, 2023. These advances include acknowledging and rewarding learning institutions that excel in providing exceptional services and assistance to international students.

With this update, expectation is that these institutions will prioritize providing adequate support to their students by limiting enrollments to a manageable level, including providing suitable housing options. In welcoming international students, Canada shows the responsibility to make sure that students are supported when they come to the country.

Ahead of the September 2024 semester, necessary measures will surface to ensure that designated learning institutions provide adequate student support. It is imperative for provincial and territorial governments, learning institutions and other education stakeholders to work together to set up international students for success in Canada.

The new policy updates for international students in Canada will provide them with a strong financial footing as they begin their academic journey in the nation.
