According to the US government, the US Mission in India has processed over a million visa applications for non-immigrants this year. This is more than its annual goal.
Last year, over 1.2 million people travelled to the USA, making it one of the most substantial travel relations in the whole world. Indians represent over 10% of all USA visa applications in 2023 worldwide. This includes 20% of student visas and 65% of H&L (employment visa) applicants. According to a US Embassy statement, “The United States welcomes the growth of this category.”
The US has also issued 102,655 F-1 Visas to Indians until August 2023. In June, July and August, an 84.894 student visa for the USA is issued for the next academic year who wish to study in the USA. According to the US State Department, most F-1 Visas were issued in June. The estimated number is 40,224.
After the pandemic, the embassies struggled to keep up with the US visa process; requests and services were hindered due to a massive shortage of staff and the closure of certain consulates. The result was a massive backlog in visa applications, which led to longer wait times for applicants. This delay in USA student visa applications also had an immediate impact on universities that recruit international students.
The United States continue to invest heavily in its operations in India, recognizing the USA student visa requirements. The Mission has increased its staffing in the last year to process more visas than ever. The Mission has invested significant improvements in existing facilities, such as the U.S. consulate in Chennai, and inaugurated a new Consulate building at Hyderabad.
The mission also implemented strategies for increasing efficiency. Interview waivers were extended to new visa categories, and staff from around the globe could contribute to Indian Visa processing via remote work. The Mission will implement a pilot project early next year that allows H&L category employment visa applicants to renew their domestic visas.
All of the measures were successful, and the US exceeded its goal for 2023 before the end of the year. Studying in the USA from India is one of the most important markets for student visas, and these strategies to improve visa processing have strengthened partnerships between the countries. The Mission will implement a pilot project early next year to allow qualified H&L category employment visa applicants to renew their visas at home.
Eric Garcetti, the American Ambassador to India, expressed his happiness when he shared this information. He said, “Our relationship with India in the context of buisness, study, or any other affects us most, and our relationship with India is one of the most precious worldwide. He added, “The strings which hold folks together are stronger than ever. We will continue to work on the USA students visa process in record numbers that allow them to study in the USA for Indian students and visit the United States to experience first-hand the U.S. – India friendship.”
